Why Wichita is different
What Wichita does to carpet, and what we do about it
Every home tracks dirt in. Wichita adds a year of its own: long pollen seasons, gritty spring wind, sticky summers and icy winters. Pick a view to see what each one does to your carpet, how we clean it out, and what helps in between.
-
Feb–Oct
Pollen
Wichita topped AAFA’s Allergy Capitals list from 2023 to 2025, and ranked sixth in 2026.
What it doesTree pollen arrives in late winter, grass follows into June and ragweed peaks in September. It rides in on shoes, clothes, pets and open windows, then works down into the pile, and each trip across the room kicks some back into the air.
How we clean itVacuuming lifts what sits on top. Hot water extraction rinses the pile down to the backing and pulls the water straight back out, taking trapped pollen and other allergens with it.
What you can doWipe your dog’s paws and brush its coat after walks, since fur carries pollen in. Swap the furnace filter as each season starts, and keep the windows shut on high-count days.

Mar–May
Spring wind & grit
March and April are the city’s windiest months, by NOAA’s records.
What it doesKansas wind sifts fine dust and sandy grit through door gaps and onto every shoe. Underfoot, that grit works like sandpaper, dulling fibers and wearing the paths you walk most until they look gray even after vacuuming.
How we clean itGrit comes out dry first, with a thorough professional vacuuming. Then the traffic lanes get pre-treated before the hot water extraction, so the clean reaches what’s been ground in.
What you can doCatch grit before it reaches carpet: a stiff, scraping mat outdoors and an absorbent one just inside. While the wind is up, give entries and hallways an extra pass with the vacuum each week.
-
Jun–Aug
Muggy summers
An average Wichita summer morning sits near 80% relative humidity (NOAA).
What it doesDamp air slows everything that has to dry, from a spilled glass of tea to a freshly cleaned room. A spill that lingers can wick back up as a stain, and old pet accidents smell strongest on the stickiest days.
How we clean itThe rinse goes down and the extraction pulls it right back up, so far less water stays behind. Every clean is deodorized, and we’ll tell you how to set up your rooms to dry.
What you can doBlot a spill while it’s wet, then aim a fan at the spot. In this weather, the spill that sits overnight is the one that comes back.
-
Nov–Mar
Ice melt
The first freeze usually lands between late October and early November (NWS Wichita).
What it doesSalt and ice melt ride in on boots and dry into a white, chalky film. Left in place, the residue holds on to soil, and the Carpet and Rug Institute warns it can stain for good.
How we clean itWe pre-treat the salty paths by your doors before the main clean, and the hot water rinse carries the residue out instead of spreading it around.
What you can doPark a boot tray by every door you use in winter. Let tracked-in salt dry, crumble it loose and vacuum it up before any blotting; scrubbing it wet only drives it deeper.

Your visit
How a Wichita carpet cleaning works, start to finish
What we do, what we bring and how long it takes. Every visit runs in the same order, whether it’s one bedroom in Riverside or a whole house in Derby.
-
A walk-through and your price
We look the carpet over with you, note the spots and busy paths, and settle the price, along with how long the job should take, before any cleaning starts.
-
Dry soil out first
Grit comes out dry, before any water goes down. A careful vacuuming lifts the dust, pollen and sand that would otherwise turn to mud in the rinse.
We useProfessional vacuuming
-
Pre-treat spots and paths
Stains, pet spots and the lanes from the door to the couch get a treatment matched to what’s there, so they’re loosened before the main clean.
We useEco-friendly pre-treatments
-
Hot water extraction
The deep clean, often called steam cleaning. A rinse of hot water and eco-friendly solution goes down into the pile, and the wand draws it straight back up with the soil it loosened.
We useHot water extractionEco-friendly solutions
-
Deodorize
A deodorizer works on the smells soaked into the pile, so the room smells clean rather than perfumed.
We useDeodorizer
-
Groom, and protect if you’d like
We brush the pile so it dries even and soft. Protector is up to you: it helps the next spill sit on top instead of soaking in.
We useGroomingCarpet protector (optional)
After we leave
Drying, and the first day
How fast carpet dries comes down to its pile, the airflow in your rooms and Wichita’s weather that day. Before we pack up, we’ll give you our best read on yours.
- Summer
- Windows shut and the AC on. It wrings moisture out of the air while it cools.
- Winter
- Furnace air is dry, which helps. Set the thermostat fan to On to keep it moving.
- Spring & fall
- Open up only on a dry, low-pollen day. Otherwise, ceiling fans and the HVAC fan.
Until it’s dry: clean socks instead of shoes, pets in another room, and furniture back once the pile feels dry to the touch.
Carpet types
What’s on your floor?
Carpet is built in a few different ways, and each one wears, hides dirt and cleans a little differently. Pick a sample to see what yours needs.

Cut pile
Plush & Saxony
- You’ll know it by
- A smooth, velvety surface that shows footprints and vacuum lines.
- Usually made of
- Nylon or polyester.
- What it needs
- Spills spread fast into the dense pile, so blot them right away, and vacuum in one direction to keep the nap even.
- How we handle it
- We groom the pile as we finish, so it dries smooth and soft.

Twisted cut pile
Textured & frieze
- You’ll know it by
- Twisted yarns that hide footprints. Frieze has longer, curly twists that look a little shaggy.
- Usually made of
- Nylon or polyester, sometimes triexta.
- What it needs
- The texture hides soil well, so it’s often dirtier than it looks. Vacuum slowly, with the brush set for a taller pile.
- How we handle it
- Pre-treated traffic paths and a thorough rinse reach the soil the texture hides.

Loop pile
Berber & loop
- You’ll know it by
- Rows of uncut loops, low and tough, often flecked with color.
- Usually made of
- Often olefin (polypropylene) or nylon, sometimes wool.
- What it needs
- Olefin loops hold on to oily soil, which shows as dark paths. Snip a pulled loop level with the rest; never yank it.
- How we handle it
- Oily traffic lanes get pre-treated before the rinse, and we point out any snags before we start.

Natural fiber
Wool
- You’ll know it by
- A soft, matte pile with a natural spring to it. Less common wall to wall, and usually the priciest.
- Usually made of
- Wool, sometimes blended with nylon.
- What it needs
- Mild, wool-safe products and no more water than the job needs. Harsh or alkaline cleaners can make its dyes bleed.
- How we handle it
- Let us know it’s wool when you book. Rick will look it over first and tell you plainly what he’d recommend.

FAQ
Carpet cleaning in Wichita: your questions
The local questions we hear most, answered straight.
What makes carpet cleaning in Wichita different?
The weather leaves its mark. Pollen runs from late winter into fall, spring wind blows in fine grit, summers are humid and winters bring ice melt. Each one builds up in carpet a little differently, so we pre-treat for what your rooms have been through before the hot water extraction rinses it out.
When is the best time of year to clean carpet in Wichita?
Spring and late fall suit most homes. A spring clean clears out winter’s salt and the first wave of pollen, and a late-fall clean gets the ragweed out before the holidays. Our season-by-season guide goes month by month.
Does Wichita’s humidity change how long carpet takes to dry?
Yes. Muggy summer air is already holding plenty of water, so a carpet dries slower in July than in January. Before we leave, we’ll give you our best read on your rooms, and closing the windows and running the AC speeds things up.
Can you get winter ice-melt residue out of carpet?
Usually, yes. Fresh salt residue lifts well with a pre-treatment and a hot water rinse. Residue that has sat for months can leave a mark, and if we think one will stay, we’ll say so before we start.
Will a carpet cleaning help during Wichita’s allergy season?
It can help. Wichita topped AAFA’s Allergy Capitals report three years running, from 2023 to 2025, and carpet holds on to pollen and other allergens. A hot water extraction rinse removes much of what a vacuum leaves behind. It isn’t a medical treatment, though, so keep following your doctor’s advice.
Do you offer a discount for McConnell Air Force Base families?
Yes. We offer military and first responder discounts, so mention it when you call or request your quote. Moving on orders? Our move-out guide covers carpet and your security deposit.
Do you clean apartments and rental homes in Wichita?
Yes. We clean for renters, landlords and property managers, including move-out and move-in cleans, with the same walk-through and upfront price as any other job.
Is Rick’s a local Wichita company?
Yes. Rick’s is family-owned and Wichita-based, not a franchise, and has cleaned carpet all over the city for more than 15 years. Here’s how it started.
What kinds of carpet do you clean?
Wall-to-wall carpet in homes, rentals and businesses, from plush and textured cut pile to Berber, plus commercial carpet tile. If yours is wool, tell us when you book. Area rugs, furniture and pet accidents have pages of their own: rugs, upholstery and pet stains.
