Seasonal care

The best time to clean carpet in Wichita, season by season

Carpet that needs cleaning should get it, whatever the month. But each Wichita season leaves its own mark, from spring pollen to winter ice melt, and a little planning gets more out of every cleaning.

The short version

  • Most homes do best with a professional clean every 6 to 12 months. Carpet makers ask for one at least every 12 to 18.
  • Spring is the big one in Wichita: tree and grass pollen arrive while winter’s grit and ice melt are still in the carpet.
  • Late fall, after the first freeze ends ragweed season and before holiday company, is the other natural time.
  • Summer and winter work fine too. Run the AC in summer, and keep ice melt off the carpet in winter.

There’s no bad time to clean carpet that needs it. A spill, a move or a pet accident doesn’t wait for the right month. But if you’re planning a regular cleaning, the calendar matters more in Wichita than in a lot of places. Each season here brings its own mix of pollen, humidity, wind and winter grit, and timing your cleaning around them gets you more out of it.

How often should carpet be cleaned?

The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends a professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months, and many carpet warranties ask for proof of regular professional cleaning, so keep your receipts. Treat that as the minimum. For most homes, we suggest every 6 to 12 months: closer to six with pets, kids or allergies, and closer to twelve in a quieter house.

Your household How often Good times of year
Pets, young kids or allergies About every 6 months Spring and late fall
A busy family home Every 6 to 12 months Spring, or late fall
Adults only, light traffic About once a year Spring
A rental between tenants Every turnover After move-out, before the walkthrough

Traffic lanes, entryways and stairs get dirty faster than the rest of the house. If they’re looking tired between full cleanings, cleaning just those areas can carry you to the next one.

Spring: pollen season and winter’s leftovers

If you only clean once a year, spring is the season to pick. Wichita has ranked near the top of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America’s Allergy Capitals list for years: first in the country from 2023 through 2025, and sixth in the 2026 report. Tree pollen comes first, from trees like cedar, elm and maple, and in most years it runs from late winter through April. Grass pollen follows from April into early June.

Pollen comes in on shoes, clothes and pets and settles into everything, carpet included. Spring is also when winter’s leftovers are still down in the fibers: grit, mud and the ice melt tracked in from sidewalks and driveways.

When to book: once the last freeze is behind you, which in Wichita usually comes in early to mid-April. The worst of the mud season is over by then, and you’re clearing out a whole winter at once.

On windy days

Wichita is one of the windier cities in the country, and spring is when it shows. On high-pollen days, keep windows closed and use your AC, so you aren’t pulling pollen right back in behind a fresh cleaning.

Summer: humidity, open doors and pets

Summer is busy on carpet. Kids are home, doors are opening all day and pets are shedding. It’s also humid: on an average summer morning in Wichita, the relative humidity is around 80 percent, according to NOAA’s climate records.

Humidity matters for two reasons. Damp air slows drying, so after a summer cleaning, keep the AC running and the windows closed until the carpet is dry. And humid weather wakes up old pet accidents, so a smell you only notice in July is usually urine that soaked into the pad. That takes more than a surface cleaning, and our pet stain and odor removal page explains why.

When to book: any time, as long as you can run the AC afterward. Early summer, before the house fills up, is a good window.

Fall: ragweed, the furnace and the holidays

Ragweed season starts around August and peaks in mid-September, and weed pollen keeps going until the first hard freeze. In Wichita, the first freeze usually comes between late October and early November.

That makes late fall the second natural time to clean. The summer’s dirt is out, ragweed season has ended, and you’re about to close the house up for winter and turn on the furnace. It’s also just ahead of the holidays, when guests are walking through and kids are on the floor.

When to book: after the first freeze and before Thanksgiving. If you’re cleaning for company, give yourself a few days’ cushion before they arrive.

Winter: ice melt and holiday cleanup

Winter is easy to overlook, but it’s hard on carpet near the doors. Ice melt and road salt come in on boots and get ground into the fibers, and according to the IICRC, they’re a common cause of carpet that gets dirty again fast. The Carpet and Rug Institute warns that ice melt left too long can become a permanent stain.

If ice melt gets tracked in:

  1. Let it dry, then break up any crusty residue and vacuum it.
  2. Blot the spot with a mild solution of a quarter teaspoon of clear dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water. Mist it on lightly rather than soaking the carpet.
  3. Rinse with plain water and blot dry, so no soap is left behind to attract dirt.

When to book: winter works well for cleaning, and it’s a good time to catch up after the holidays. Run your heat or your HVAC fan afterward to help the carpet dry.

Between cleanings

A few habits stretch the time between cleanings, whatever the season.

  • Vacuum often, and slow down in high-traffic areas. Grit you can’t see wears down fibers every time someone walks on it.
  • Put mats at every door, one outside and one inside, and shake them out often.
  • Make it a shoes-off house if you can. A lot of what ends up in carpet comes in on shoes.
  • Blot spills right away, and don’t scrub. Our stain-by-stain guide covers what to use on the most common ones.

How Rick’s handles it

Whatever the season, your price comes first

Any time of year, a visit opens the same way: a walk through the rooms with you, a close look at the problem spots, and your price, settled before the cleaning starts.

Then it’s a thorough vacuuming, stain and traffic-lane treatment, hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning) with eco-friendly solutions, deodorizing and grooming, with carpet protector if you’d like it. We clean homes, rentals and businesses across Wichita and the surrounding towns.

“We have always been satisfied with the results of his work and always been impressed with his professional approach.”
